Q: I’m a district manager for a food company with 10 territory managers (TMs) reporting to me. I’m responsible for getting our account reps to relay vital information to the TMs, but the reps seem unwilling to share their data. How can I get them to open up?

A: Meet with their boss and explain the business necessity of having them help. Encourage their boss to factor their cooperation into their performance reviews. After the meeting, send a memo thanking their boss for monitoring the situation. If the problem persists, meet with their boss’s boss and your boss, memo in hand, to solve it.
