When your boss won’t let go

Q: I went to an interview and thought it went well, but I never heard back. I later confirmed that when my boss was called as a reference, she discussed how she would “go after” any manager who “stole me away.” She can be mean, believe me! In future interviews, can I request that my boss not be called unless there’s a firm job offer?

A: That’s one solution. Here’s another: During interviews, briefly tell the story of what your boss told this hiring manager. Say, “You should know that if you call my boss for a reference, she may threaten you!” Smile and explain that your boss behaves this way because she doesn’t want to lose you. You have a third option: Leave this boss off your reference list.
