What to say when …

in Career Management,Workplace Communication

An acquaintance at a networking event tells you that your awful boss is about to quit:

“That’s interesting. There are always rumors about who’s coming and who’s going. I’m so busy that I just focus on my work. ”

An employee who always seemed laid-back and happy suddenly throws a tantrum:

“This outburst surprises me. Usually you take these kinds of things in stride. What’s going on?”

The CEO introduces you to a consultant “who’s going to be spending a lot of time digging around your unit”:

“It’s nice to meet you. I’m so glad you’ll be helping us. Please let me know if there’s anything I can do for you. I’ll be happy to get you any information you need or explain our processes and procedures.”
