If you’re interviewing for a job or trying to win an internal promotion, don’t just make your pitch and walk away. Always end the conversation by discussing exactly what will happen next. If the other person doesn’t volunteer how the process will unfold and when you can expect to hear back on your status, ask, “Can you walk me through the timetable of how things will proceed from here?” This way, you won’t be left in the dark wondering whether to follow up in the days and weeks after the meeting.
