Former Warner-Lambert CEO Melvin Goodes made identifying potential leaders a lifelong priority. He asked executives throughout the ranks to evaluate the leadership potential of the managers they supervised by answering these questions:

Value: prizing creativity


Does the manager:
1. Support new and creative ideas, even those that might fail?

2. Encourage innovation?

3. Chafe under the status quo?

Value: being open and candid

Does the manager:
1. Welcome alternative viewpoints?

2. Confront poor performance constructively?

3. Share information openly?

Value: exploiting opportunity

Does the manager:
1. Support an environment that shares information rapidly?

2. React to new opportunities?

3. Impart a sense of urgency when the need to act is acute?
