Feedback guidance from ‘Judge Dread’

by on
in Best-Practices Leadership,Leaders & Managers

“American Idol’s” most caustic judge, Simon Cowell, may come off as unnecessarily cruel, but he’s spectacularly proficient at one leadership skill: giving honest feedback.

You can decry Cowell’s methods— he once told a contestant that she sounded “like Mickey Mouse on helium”— but you can’t argue with his success. Not only is Cowell a TV star, but he’s also a multimillionaire entrepreneur.

Lesson: You don’t have to make everyone around you feel good all the time to succeed. Just pick your spots.
