The IRS thought its new program of hiring private debt collectors would be up and running by summer. Earlier this year, the IRS hired three collection firms to hunt down debtors who owe $25,000 or less in income tax. However, a couple of the collection agencies that weren’t chosen have raised objections about the selection process. Now, the entire project is being put on hold—albeit temporarily—while the government investigates the claims.
