OSHA enforcing recordkeeping rules; find out if you must comply

At the start of 2002, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) revamped its regulations on which companies must keep injury and illness records. OSHA gave companies six months to get used to the new rules, and now it's begun enforcing them.

Under the regulations, 180,000 previously exempt companies must now track injuries and illnesses using newly designed OSHA logs. Meanwhile, 120,000 companies will be dropped from the list of those having to keep such records. OSHA will begin enforcement by sending letters asking targeted companies to mail in copies of their filled-out logs.

Any company with 10 or fewer workers doesn't have to keep such records. Also exempt are businesses (regardless of size) in specific low-hazard retail, service, finance, insurance or real estate industries.
