Smart managers may give employees a financial stake in the business by doling out stock options, incentive bonuses or other rewards. But that’s not enough. You also need to plant an emotional stake so that workers feel more connected to the company. How? Invite employees to bring spouses or friends to social events. Example: At off-site management meetings, host dinners at which attendees can bring a guest. And provide activities during the day to keep the guests busy. Another tip: Look for opportunities to praise an employee in front of his or her spouse.
