3 ways to recession-proof your career

In tough economic times, it’s critical to remember the new rules of the workplace, says communication and leadership coach Peggy Klaus.

Consider these three rules:

1. The workplace is no place for modesty. Is something holding you back from saying to others, “I’m really good at this job”? Don’t be afraid to brag. You also need to brand yourself, think critically and actively manage your career, she says.

2. A paycheck player may eventually stop getting one. To avoid sounding like someone who’s just in it for the paycheck, show your passion, energy and enthusiasm for the job. “The way the workplace has evolved,” says Klaus, “no one is safe.”

Tip: Video-record yourself talking about your job. Make sure your excitement leaps off the screen.

3. Even your dream job won’t be perfect. Don’t cut off career options before you explore them. It may be holding you back from discovering new opportunities.
