Ensure your desk is in good hands, even when you’re out for the day. A desk manual with crystal-clear wording helps a temp or a fill-in do the job right. Example: Instead of “Display a positive attitude,” write “Smile, make eye contact, and greet management by name.” And if you don’t want “slang” phrases used on phone calls with customers, make it explicit. Example: “Avoid phrases like ‘OK,’ ‘Yeah,’ ‘Hold on,’ ‘Honey’ and ‘See ya.’”
