When you’re ready to turn the audience’s focus from a PowerPoint slide to you, here’s how to grab their attention. (No one enjoys talking to people staring blankly at a screen.) Press one of these two keys:
1. The “B” key on your keyboard puts a black slide on the screen (best in a darkened room).
2. The “W” key puts a blank, white slide on the screen (best in a lighted room).
Either way, the visual break allows you a graceful way to direct eyeballs on you and your words, without losing your place in the presentation. It also can be useful as a way to transition from one topic to the next.
To restart your slides, simply press the “B” or “W” key again.
