No judgment, no nothing

by on
in Best-Practices Leadership,Leaders & Managers

Leadership titans Warren Bennis and Noel Tichy say that making judgment calls “is the essential job of a leader.”

“With good judgment, little else matters; without good judgment, nothing else matters,” they say in Judgment: How Winning Leaders Make Great Calls.

Here’s what a leader must have and do to make good judgment calls:
  • Possess strong character.

  • Show courage.

  • Be a good learner.

  • Create knowledge through stories that transmit ideas, values and emotional energy.

  • Convey a teachable point of view.

  • Prepare to make the call.

  • Make the call.

  • See that it’s executed.

  • Learn and adjust.
Lesson: Bennis and Tichy don’t think judgment comes naturally: They’re certain it’s learned.
