Despite much discussion about their pros, cons and legal implications, video résumés aren’t yet catching fire with employers or employees. CareerBuilder recently discontinued its video résumé service. Recruiters have shown little demand for them.
And a recent Robert Half International survey found that only one-quarter of executives say their companies accept video résumés. One reason: They fear claims of discrimination because videos reveal an applicant’s gender, age, race and disabilities.
Advice: Establish a policy on whether you’ll accept video résumés. Tell managers whether they can or can’t click on links to YouTube video résumés provided by applicants. Use your career web page to let potential applicants know your policy. If you do accept them, train hiring managers about the importance of ignoring protected characteristics such as age and race.
