Roughly half of Wayne County’s 1,032 workers are switching to a four-day workweek to cut commuting costs and energy bills and to boost employee morale.
County officials hope the move will cut utility costs by $300,000 per year. Sue Guy, the county’s HR director, said she has received calls from 14 other North Carolina counties that are considering similar changes.
The county court systems and sheriff’s office continue to operate their usual hours, as do departments such as the register of deeds, the tax office and the county manager’s office.
While some officials worry the shorter workweek will affect customer service, others point out that the alternative schedule could allow some offices to stay open later, which might better suit some citizens’ schedules.
