Unpaid time off and exempt employees

Q. Some of our exempt salaried employees are requesting time off without pay. Can we do this without jeopardizing their exempt status?

A. Deductions from salary generally jeopardize exempt status. There are several permitted deductions, however, and one of them allows you to deduct from salary for absences of a day or more caused by personal reasons. Do not deduct for less than a full-day absence.
