In one scant month, exempt employees who don’t earn at least $913 a week must be reclassified as overtime-eligible nonexempt employees. Highly compensated employees must earn $134,004 a year, including $913 a week. This is your final check to ensure that your systems and processes are functioning correctly.

Check No. 1: Time sheets. Your soon-to-be-nonexempt employees should already be filing time sheets. Here’s where you should be looking:

• Late time sheets. Your payroll system should be flagging employees who submit their time sheets late. Action item: Show employees the computer printout of their late time sheets and reinforce to them that they must submit their time sheets on time.
