Are you dreaming about moving up the ranks in your organization and taking on arole? Hone these four skills to land the job and succeed at it:
Communication. Plenty of leaders fail in this area, causing mistakes, misunderstandings, low morale and productivity, and turnover. Effectively explaining yourself, listening, mediating conflict and providing feedback are vital to being a successful leader. (By reading this newsletter, you are already taking a big step toward honing this critical skill, so kudos.)
Adaptability. As a leader, you must be able to roll with the punches, quickly adapt to change and have an open mind. If you struggle with change, make building this skill a top priority.
Honesty. Sure, the most respected leaders are open and honest, but it’s more than that. You must be able to tell the truth, even when people don’t want to hear it. Plus, you must manage employees’ expectations, balancing brutal honesty with tact and respect.
Resilience. First, you have to be able to bounce back quickly from bad situations. Perhaps as important, however, is that you must be able to take criticism—sometimes scathing—and accept the fact that people are going to resent you. If you are thin-skinned, toughen up.
