Do your managers use language that some may take as racial slurs? If so, make sure it stops even if the manager’s intent was innocent. That’s especially true if a worker complains.
Certainly, train your managers that they cannot use common racist phrases and names. But go beyond the obvious and provide examples of other terms and behaviors that may not seem obvious. The following case provides an example.
Recent case: Jessie, who is black, worked successfully for her employer for 15 years. She was technically competent.
Then her attitude apparently changed. Managers complained that she refused to follow directions and frequently disrupted the workplace. Over the next few years, she was frequently warned that her refusal to follow directions and listen to her managers would result in discipline. She received several “final” warnings, but each time her employer allowed her to keep her job.
