Peter J. Boni, 69, has served as CEO of six companies, including Safeguard Scientifics and On-Line Software International. A former special operations infantry officer in the U.S. Army, he’s author of the new book, All Hands on Deck. Morey Stettner, editor of Executive, interviewed him recently.
Executive Leadership: How did you transition from the Vietnam War to a business career?
Boni: When I got out of the Army with what I call my “Rice Paddy MBA,” I was 25 and ready to move on with my life. I was happy to have all my arms and all my legs. I made a goal to be vice president of a Fortune 500 company in 10 years. I did it in eight.
EL: How did you get there so quickly?
Boni: I took on troubled or challenged situations, volunteered to tackle them and gained recognition for making advances in those situations.
