Aretha Franklin said it best: “All I’m asking is for a little respect.”

When employees think about what makes for satisfying work, respectful treatment of all employees at all levels was rated “very important” by 72% of those polled for a recent Society for Human Resource Management study.

Respect ranked highest of all, well ahead of pay, benefits, job security and other material aspects of work that might be expected to rate highly.

In fact, it’s the intangible workers value most. Trust—the flip side of the respect coin—ranked second in the SHRM poll.
