Pay or stay? A new bill may allow the IRS to stop tax debtors from leaving the country.
Under the “Trade Facilitation and Trade Enforcement Act of 2015” (S. 1269), approved by the Senate on May 14, the tax law would be amended to permit authorities to revoke or deny a passport for U.S. taxpayers who have unpaid taxes of at least $50,000 or don’t provide their Social Security number. But a similar measure in Congress failed last year.
