Don’t throw employees to the wolves when they take on new roles. When you promote them or assign them work that stretches their current skill sets, increase the chances that they’ll succeed by asking them to answer these questions:
- How does this new opportunity differ from your previous role? The answer lets you know that they understand their new responsibilities. In addition, you can clear up any confusion they have about the new role.
- What support do you need to navigate those challenges successfully? Whether that is specific training, mentoring from you, support from co-workers, or equipment and software, make sure that employees have everything they need to meet your expectations for the task or new position.
