Boost morale with a ‘Yes!’

If employees came to you with outlandish requests—such as “Could we install a cash bar in the lunchroom?”—you would naturally say “No.” But you could be saying “No” too often if it has become a knee-jerk response.

Many managers say “No” without fully weighing the benefits of accommodating an employee’s request. Repeated refusals can be demoralizing and demotivating for employees—especially when, with a little flexibility on your part, their wishes could be easily granted.

Make this resolution: The next time an employee approaches you with a request, stop yourself from automatically replying, “We can’t do that!” Instead, ask yourself, “Can we do that?”
