LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner has an interesting strategy for keeping weekly staff meetings positive: Before diving into the numbers, strategic plans and other quantifiable metrics, he requires each member of his staff to share one personal and one professional accomplishment from the previous week.

The team then moves into the straightforward business discussions, many of which are focused around problems or negative situations. Weiner has found that leading with accomplishments puts his team in a more upbeat frame of mind and readies them to deal more effectively with what’s going wrong.

While somewhat unconventional, Weiner’s meeting technique is supported by research from Professor Teresa Amabile at Harvard Business School. Amabile’s survey of more than 12,000 employees revealed a concept that she calls “the power of small wins.” Her data indicates that employees are more motivated by meaningful recognition of progress than they are by financial incentives or pressure.

Objective: Bring some positivity to your meetings and employee interaction by allowing your staff to share their wins.
