If you’ve hired the perfect candidate, you want to make sure the person sticks around for a while. Start off on the best foot by creating a smooth and informative orientation. Prepare for an outstanding first day with this checklist:
- Provide information ahead of time. Let the new employee know what identification to bring, where parking is located and whom he or she should ask for upon arrival.
- Prepare the workstation. Set up his or her computer, email account and phone. Have a nameplate, a badge, office supplies and business cards waiting.
- Orient the newbie to the office. Share the location of the bathroom, copier and break room. Introduce new hires to employees they will interact with so they know whom to turn to with questions.
- Schedule start dates around vacations. Make certain that an employee’s first day doesn’t coincide with a supervisor’s time off.
