Start a positive and meaningful conversation with staff members. If you ask “How are you?” they might respond “Fine” or “Hanging in there.” Ask one of these questions instead:

  • “What are you working on?”
  • “What are you excited about?”
  • “What do I need to know?”
  • “What is the best thing that happened this week?”

With your question, you can focus the employee on what is going well or draw out more information than a perfunctory greeting.
