Everyone makes mistakes. What can set you apart is how you handle them. Take these steps to recover after you mess up:
- Ponder your error. Analyze why the mistake happened and exactly how you failed.
- Offer an apology. If the situation warrants it, say you’re sorry to anyone you affected, but just once. Over-apologizing doesn’t change the mistake, but it will make you appear unprofessional.
- Present your plan of action. Explain how you will rectify the situation and prevent it from happening again.
- Seek feedback. Show that you are willing to grow from the situation and are open to ideas for preventing the issue from recurring.
