Workers who call in sick usually get the benefit of the doubt, but 31% of managers polled by CareerBuilder.com say they have checked to see if an absent employee was telling the truth.

Asking for a doctor’s note was the most popular way to find out if the absence was legit (66%), followed by calling the employee (49%). As many as 15% literally went the extra mile and drove past the employee’s house.
