According to a new report by the Treasury Inspector General of Tax Administration (TIGTA), the IRS isn’t doing a good job handling complaints about tax return preparers. (“Processes Do Not Ensure That Complaints Against Tax Return Preparers Are Timely, Accurately, and Consistently Processed,” Ref. No. 2014-40-056, 8/8/14)
A taxpayer can lodge a protest with the IRS by filing Form 14157, Complaint: Tax Return Preparer. However, as of September 2013, the IRS had not followed up on more than half of the complaints filed in 2012 and 2013. In addition, the agency is having trouble contacting taxpayers to fill in missing information.
What’s the reason from the IRS? As usual, the IRS cited budget cuts as the main problem.
