At work or in our personal lives, growth occurs when we’re challenged almost beyond our limits. We experience the best of ourselves only after struggle, frustration and even failure, says career coach Julie Winkle Giulioni.

She offers these tips for finding the right amount of struggle to spark growth.

•  Find meaningful projects. Working for something significant is fulfilling and it can be easier to endure challenges for work you find meaningful.

•  Choose your words wisely. Something isn’t “impossible,” it’s a “stretch.” We internalize the things we say, so make sure to keep your language positive.

•  Practice mindfulness. It’s easy to slip into thinking about worst-case scenarios, but try not to do it. Instead, apply your focus to the task at hand and all you’re learning from it.
