When you make a request at work, the best way to get what you want is to “own the question,” says leadership writer and speaker Geoffrey James. Owning the question is the difference between asking if the company has the budget for a big purchase (usually not) and asking how much work and what kind of results could justify that purchase.

This approach works because any problems standing between you and a “yes” are almost always solved within the parameters of the question being asked.
