According to a recent report by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), severe budget cuts are hurting the IRS, but individual taxpayers may be the ones who are really suffering. (TIGTA Reference Number: 2014-40-038, 6/27/14) Specifically, the IRS stopped preparing tax returns for individuals at their walk-in centers during the 2014 tax filing season for ’13 returns and would only answer basic tax questions. These cutbacks, along with other reductions in taxpayer services, reputedly saved the IRS about $10 million. But TIGTA scolded the IRS for ignoring the needs of the elderly and others who can’t afford to hire tax return preparers.

Despite the TIGTA report, don’t expect the recent trend to change anytime soon.
