Heads up: Your odds of getting hit with an audit of your I-9 forms took another jump last year.
In fiscal year 2013, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) inspected the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Forms at 3,127 employers.
As the chart shows, while the number of inspections last year was up only slightly from 2012, the spike has been dramatic since 2008. Plus, total fines generated by these federal audits have grown from just $1 million in 2009 to more than $15 million last year.
I-9 inspections are part of the Obama administration’s “bold new audit initiative” to focus on immigration reform at the workplace level.
