Responding to calls for action, including an impassioned plea from National Taxpayer Advocate Nina Olson in her annual address to Congress, the IRS has crafted a new “Taxpayer Bill of Rights.” (IRS News Release IR-2014-72, 6/10/14)
The document, which is modeled after Bill of Rights in the U.S. constitution, incorporates existing tax code provisions and updates previous efforts to identify taxpayer rights. “Respecting taxpayer rights continues to be a top priority for IRS employees, and the new Taxpayer Bill of Rights summarizes these important protections in a clearer, more understandable format than ever before,” said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen. Also, the IRS will include a printed version with correspondence sent to taxpayers.
