Q: We are about to implement a self-service time and attendance system that will allow employees to view their time cards at home. They’re not required to do this and they couldn’t make any changes to their time cards. Do we need to pay employees for this time?

A: There’s no clear-cut answer to this question. This may or may not be de minimis time, depending on how long employees are engaged in this activity. De minimis time, which consists of no more than a few minutes, need not be paid for. The best thing to do is to call your local DOL office and ask.
