A handful of employers—mostly tech companies—are changing the way they offer vacation time.
The goal: Encourage employees to take more of it.
The solution: Unlimited paid time off. They’re trying to tamp down the sluggish productivity and feelings of overwork that scores of studies attribute to “vacation deprivation.”
Instead of the typical 10 days of paid vacation after a year on the job and another few days off every five or 10 years after that, these companies allow employees to take as many vacation days as they need—as long as they get their work done.
Some employers don’t even track how many days each employee takes, and most combine all paid time off—sick days,, flextime that occasionally results in a short work day and vacation—into the policy.
