You may not need to ask for that raise you’re hoping for, experts say. Instead, try these tactics.

  1. Attract new customers. Your bottom line may increase if you add value via new sales or growth,
  2. Do more work. If you take on extra responsibilities and save the company money, that will be noticed.
  3. Find someone to speak well of you. Without outright bragging, make sure others know about the good work you’re doing. That will make them more likely to pass praise on to your boss.
  4. Make your boss look like a pro. If the boss looks like a great leader with a smooth-running team, she’ll likely move up, leaving room for you to do the same.
