Instead of hitching your wagon to a particular star, look for opportunities to work with managers throughout your enterprise. The more people know about your skills and abilities, the more chances you'll have to learn about important opportunities. Remember this also when looking for potential mentors; sometimes, the best mentors may be from an entirely different part of your organization.
