Darren and Heather were talking over lunch. "I have to deal with employee-of-the-month nominations," Darren said, "and I'm dreading it. I got a bunch of complaints last month— thatlikes Tony Jones—because he's a big showoff. Which he is, I guess."
"I have the reverse problem," Heather said. "Mary Smith won it two months ago — not for the first time — and she asked me to not nominate her again. She doesn't like the attention."
"Either way," Darren said, "giving this award doesn't do much for motivation. Maybe we should come up with an alternative and present it to the boss."
Though common, employee-of-the-month programs are mostly built on a false premise: that recognizing individual high performers will inspire better performance in everyone else.
