When you work in an enterprise to which every position and every person is vital, the loss of any employee interferes with the workflow. It's important to close the gap as quickly as you can with minimum disruption. How can you keep things moving until a new employee gets up to speed?

If you've already done a good job of cross-training your people, they can help fill in until a new employee is ready to take over. If not, do some fast, selective cross-training. Pick two or three of the more versatile, flexible people on your staff and teach them what has to be done. Here are some guidelines to help you manage a smoother transition:
