A former accounting manager at Texas Southern University is seeking $500,000 in damages and reinstatement, claiming the university fired him because of his Nigerian heritage.
He began work for the university in 2009 as a senior accountant. He was promoted in mid-2010 to an accounting manager position. At that point, apparently, things began to sour. He claims his supervisor treated him with contempt because of his national heritage. Eventually, he was terminated.
Several factors may be working against the accountant. He is acting as his own lawyer, and it is not clear whether he ever filed a complaint with the EEOC. Additionally, the $500,000 exceeds the ceiling on damages under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.
While this case may disappear quickly, employers should still be on guard against discriminatory behavior based on national origin or any other protected characteristic.
