Summer can be a trying time for managers. A number of problems seem to get worse — absenteeism, tardiness, inattention. People go on vacation and then come back feel­ing out of touch with their work and their co-workers. But effective managers and enterprises take steps to keep productivity up to par dur­ing the warm season. Here are some approaches that can help you:

Supervise with summer in mind. Anticipate the changes the vacation season brings. Plan ahead as you schedule around worker absences: Who can cover for whom? What can be put off for a while? What needs doing ahead of time? Be prepared for confusion about tempo­rary work assignments, worries about leaving important work in someone else's hands, and concerns about being behind when people get back.
