October to December race by in a dizzying flash at Mountain Sweets. Orders for the company's gourmet candies pour in from around the world, and your six-member team processes them. Everybody counts the days until Dec. 24 when the phones go silent. Two of your staff will get their turn at the coveted post-holiday vacation slots. The rest will walk in looking somewhat dazed on Dec. 26.

Back in the day, Mountain Sweets shut down for two weeks at year's end, but that tradition was eliminated a few years ago. Now, some departments draw straws to see who gets winter vacations; others, like your team, rotate so everyone gets a turn.

The four employees who have to work accomplish little until mid-January. Last year, you let that happen. But you paid dearly for the luxury. As your team scram­bled to catch up before the end of the quarter, tension levels rivaled those of the rush season.
