When laggards repeatedly fail to meet minimal job expectations, putting them on probation will only get you so far. To get them to quit, quote Hyrum Smith, creator of the Franklin Planner, “Inner peace comes from identifying what’s important to you and bringing your life in line with that.”

Just make sure not to indulge too many petty complaints from disgruntled employees. To help them withstand their travails, cite the late journalist Sydney Harris’ comment, “When I hear somebody sigh, ‘Life is hard,’ I am always tempted to ask, ‘Compared to what?’”
