Cite the evidence that matters most

To build an argument, you can’t just stick to generalities. You need to support your assertion with facts or evidence that resonates with the individual or group you want to persuade.

For bosses who crave data, cite statistics, spreadsheets and other verifiable information. For audiences that want to be entertained as well as informed, share anecdotes that vividly capture a time, place and activity. Toss in a few general facts to place your story in a broader context.

Don’t trot out evidence that you find compelling but that others may ignore. Your analytical approach can and probably will differ from your counterparts. Shove aside your biases so that you construct an argument that appeals to your listeners.
