With your job security fluttering in the wind, you may be tempted to show off to prove your worth. But trying too hard to trumpet your skills can backfire. Remember the late musician Warren Zevon’s line, “You don’t have to firebomb Dresden to prove you can fly a plane.”

As long as you apply your talent for all to see, you let others conclude for themselves that you’re irreplaceable. Heed the early 20th-century writer Oliver Herford’s observation, “Modesty is the gentle art of enhancing your charm by pretending not to be aware of it.”
