Replace compliance with engagement

Management is a technology—a technology from the 1850s.  Few 19th century technologies are still in use. And no matter how you cut it, management is designed purely to get compliance.

“We want some measure of compliance in organizations, but what we want more than anything else is engagement,” says leadership guru Daniel Pink, pointing to “staggeringly low levels of engagement” in today’s workplace.

So how to replace compliance with engagement? Autonomy, Pink says: “Sometimes enormous amounts of autonomy.”

A favorite example is Australian software company Atlassian. Once per quarter, employees work on whatever they want, as long as they present it to everyone the next day.

Result: product fixes, new product ideas and process improvements.
