You treat your administrative aides with friendly professionalism. They smile and seem happy. So everything’s fine, right?
Administrative Professionals Week (April 18–24) is a perfect time to dig deeper to explore how your admins can make a greater contribution at work. Do you challenge them to learn and grow on the job? Do you encourage them to work independently and suggest time- or money-saving ideas? Do you regularly assess their job satisfaction?
Recognizing your administrative assistants with a one-day special event can’t hurt. But a better way to honor them is to discuss how you can pave the way for professional development. Ask them about their career aspirations. Identify training gaps and fill them. Dangle different kinds of assignments that allow them to explore new areas of the organization and expand their skill set.
If you really want to dignify their fine efforts, give them an annual budget to improve operations and workplace productivity. Bya limited amount of authority to them, you implicitly signal that you trust their judgment and you want them to take more responsibility for helping you—and the whole office—produce better results.
