Turn YouTube into a stimulating learning tool
Looking for a tool to launch a thought-provoking discussion at your next staff meeting? Show your team a short educational video by screening one of the featured selections at youtube.com/edu.
YouTube’s Educational Channel offers free video clips (most under 10 minutes). The videos largely consist of experts discussing a range of business and non-business topics. For example, you can show a 10-minute Harvard Business School interview with Nikos Mourkogiannis, author of Purpose, titled “Understanding Your Strategic Purpose.”
Squeeze more energy efficiency out of your computing
Did you know today’s computers deliver 50 percent more energy efficiency than similar models just a few years old? The federal government’s Energy Star program now recognizes computers with an 85 percent or higher efficiency rating, so keep this in mind when replacing aging machines.
Train your employees to put their computers in sleep mode if they leave their desk for more than 10 minutes. That’s better than letting the screen saver take over, which continues to eat up electricity. Also ask them to check the brightness on their monitors. Reducing brightness slightly so that the screen isn’t at its maximum setting not only saves electricity but may also protect users’ eyes.
